Usborne Very First Reading Books – Review

Usborne are publishing a new series of books on 26 March – their Very First Reading books, specifically developed for young children learning to read.

The scheme is based on synthetic phonics and is designed to work alongside many of the reading methods that are used in school.  The 15 books in the series follow a logical progression which allows children to build their confidence as they practise blending the sounds they have learned in school. World Book Day/Evans Schools Short Story Competition winners

As part of the World Book Day Celebrations today the winners of the 2010 World Book Day / Evans Schools Short Story Competition have been announced, to coincide with the publication by Evans of a selection of the best stories.

There are two volumes, according to age group; The Escape of Hanna Schmidt & Lord of the Ring Doughnuts.

Working from a first line, primary and secondary school children across the country were invited to create a short story or poem to compete for entry in two anthologies. (more…)

Edge – books for older reluctant readers

What if your child has been at school for a few years, but is still finding reading a struggle? We spoke to Adrian Cole, Senior Editor at Franklin Watts, about their ‘Edge’ series of books for reluctant readers.

The Edge series has been created for children aged 7 – 12+ with a reading age of around 7-9. The books have been designed to appeal to older children, whilst at the same time having the right level of text for less secure readers.

Adrian gave us some background on the series’ development and some advice for parents looking to encourage their children if they are less confident readers. (more…)
